After career exploration, the author's daughter entered the family business

For a while, it seemed that Susan was not going to be a part of it. As the youngest child and only girl, she  was the only one of the kids who wanted to go to college. Her first love was fashion design and she studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology, which is a very prestigious school for the fashion trade in Manhattan.

Susan knew I was skeptical about her career choice, but she was shrewd and claimed that her interest in fashion had come to her honestly—passed down from my mother Feiga, the shirtmaker from Skala. It might have been different if my poor mother were still living, but what did any of us know of the schmattes trade today?

I thought it was better she should go into the family business where it was more of a sure thing. Florence told her the same thing.
