Author and publisher Dan Ruby took part by videoconference in the annual gathering of Skala descendants on Sunday, November 10. About 20 descendants of Skala families attended the luncheon either in person in New York or by videoconference—including several actually born there.

The meeting, organized by the Skala Research Group and chaired by Tony Hausner, was the latest gathering of an organization that has been behind many of the memorials to the Jews of Skala, including most notably the 2009 English translation of the Skala yizkor book.

Ruby announced the publishing plan for the forthcoming memoir, Live Another Day, by Michael Edelstein. The book will be published by Ruby Brothers Media in Summer 2020. A promotional website will go live next month.

Edelstein was a Skala native, and much of the book narrative takes place in Skala during the Holocaust years. Edelstein participated in some previous SRG activities, including the funding of a wall and plaque at the Skala Jewish cemetery. Recently, he has not been well enough to attend SRG events.

Also missing from this year's event was Max Mermelstein, the long-time Skala community leader who passed away in 2018. A main topic of discussion at the meeting was over how to assure the continuation of the Skala Jewish cemetery maintenance, a process previously overseen by Mermelstein, as well as development of a longer range plan for the cemetery's perpetual care.
