Unable now to live in the open, Munie and his father resort to hiding in bunkers—first in the forest with a band of escapees and later wedged in a crawlspace in town. Munie survives a bout of typhus and a terrifying two days in the clutches of a cruel police captain. Then he reunites with his father to wait out the changing tide of the war.
